Dear Friends and Neighbors,  The last two months in Sacramento told a story we’ve lived before: families doing everything right while Washington falters. On October 1, Republicans chose to shut down the government and then left Washington for a paid vacation instead of working to lower health care costs for working families. When the country needed them to come to the table, they turned their backs and vanished, leaving millions in limbo and afraid.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The last two months in Sacramento told a story we’ve lived before: families doing everything right while Washington falters. On October 1, Republicans chose to shut down the government and then left Washington for a paid vacation instead of working to lower health care costs for working families. When the country needed them to come to the table, they turned their backs and vanished, leaving millions in limbo and afraid.

While Republicans tried to use military pay as leverage, I fought every day to get our heroes what they deserve and earned.

In the months leading up to the shutdown, I pushed for a responsible, bipartisan agreement in Washington that would keep health care affordable and accessible. Republicans refused to listen. I talked to families across our district that told me what they needed most: clear, accurate information, practical support, and affordability. Republicans still refused to listen—even to their own constituents. Their cruelty moved them to use food as leverage, leaving families wondering how they'll stay fed. This is a new low, even for them. I have always fought tirelessly for those priorities, and I will keep fighting for them every day.

I’ve spent a lot of time with the people on the ground doing the hard work to support our entire community. From local food banks serving our nurses, teachers, and service workers to our faith and community leaders mapping out who needed what and where. What was consistent everywhere I went—Sacramento stands up for each other. I joined partners across the region to help furloughed workers navigate unemployment options and to provide as much assistance and assurance as I could for struggling families, local businesses, and our air traffic controllers.

This administration’s desire to sow chaos and govern with cruelty is not limited to health care, food stamps, and the cost of living. They are using the same methods to attack our immigrant communities.

Throughout the shutdown, food insecurity became a critical issue as the Trump administration used SNAP as leverage for their greedy agenda. I refused to sit idly by while our community was left in a state of confusion and fear about where their next meal was coming from.

That's why I joined ARI, River City Food Bank, Yolo Food Bank, Elk Grove Food Bank, and South Sacramento Christian Center Pastor Les Simmons to lend a hand. Our community never leaves one another behind, and I am so proud of what all of these amazing organizations and leaders were able to accomplish for our neighbors.

My office has been working hand in hand with NorCal Resist and other community leaders to ensure that ICE operates lawfully and respects the universal rights afforded to ALL by our Constitution. In the last few weeks, the Trump Administration and ICE have exploited the tragic shooting of two National Guard members to attack entire communities.

In the days following the shooting, my office was informed that several of our Afghan neighbors were detained under false pretenses after showing up at the Moss Federal Building for what they were told was a “routine check-in.” In an instant, they were detained and ripped away from their families with no access to legal representation or outside assistance. This is unconscionable, and I will not stand for it.

For the fourth time this year, I went to the Moss Building—joined by CAIR-SVCC and NorCal Resist—to call out ICE’s cruelty and lawlessness. This fight is personal to me. I have lived the reality of what happens when fear is used to target entire communities. That can never happen again in this country, and I will never let it happen here in Sacramento.

As I've said before, when this administration attacks one of our community members, they are attacking all of us. I'll always protect our immigrant families and neighbors. They are the backbone of our community, our future, and our progress. Fear will never stand in the way of my will to fight to protect everyone's Constitutional rights.

I am fighting on all fronts—protecting health care costs, championing tech equity, protecting Sacramento’s immigrant population, and making sure Sacramento receives every penny of federal support it needs to keep our progress on the right path.

I want to be clear: I have never been more ready to take on this administration and the cowardly Republican Congress. I love Sacramento, and when they attack one of us, they attack all of us.

I hope you all have an amazing holiday season and New Year. 2026 is going to be critical to the future of our city, our state, and our country. I look forward to shaping that future together.

Happy holidays from my family to yours!
